It wasn't that Ella really minded them, but now and again the younger children would take her by the legs and swing her around until they either fell over from exhaustion or dizziness, or they accidentally let go and sent her flying. She couldn't run very far in the nest, nor could she find good hiding spots that the children could not reach or hadn't learned how to reach in. So she began a bit of bad behavior. She started scratching at the door to get out. Ella felt bad making her two legs upset, because they took such nice care of her. But she really needed a break. She meowed, yowled, and shrieked until the mother of the twoleg kits awoke, made a horrible irritated noise, and opened the door for Ella to slip out. The door was slammed shut behind her and she happily took off into the garden as the midday sun beat down on her back.
Wading through the slush, she awkwardly leaped onto the fence and swayed there until she regained her balance. Ella's ears twitched for any sound of her twolegs calling her back. They always did when they caught her trying to get out. But the kits were off as they always were during this season, and the twoleg mother was asleep as she always was at this time. Plus the father was always gone along with the kits. What a depressing existance for the mother. But Ella had no time for pity. She leaped gracefully from the pine fencing and landed awkwardly in the not so slushy grass. Her nest backed up against the forest and gave her easy access to some nice foliage for exploration. But she'd never had the urge to go very far. Not until today. Today her two-leg kits had been especially abusive toward her. They chased her around with a stick that had bristles at the end and the mother of the kits looked too tired to make them stop. She was drinking some kind of strong drink.
Ella contentedly weaved through the foliage and slipped along the trees. The strong stench of cat entered her nostrils but she ignored it. They smelled of pine and trees, but it did not deter her. She knew there were a lot of lone cats in these forests. They always thought the stupid forest was there's. Every once in awhile she'd listen to them get into spats but she hadn't quite been frightened her off. It all seemed so ridiculously petty.
The tawny cat slowed down when she heard the sound of water flowing quickly. The wind was beginning to pick up and she pricked her ears. Ella giggled softly and loped toward the noise, once again undisturbed by the thought of trespassing on the territory of other cats. They were scrawny scavengers anyway. Ella was a well fed girl who could take care of herself. Right? Right. Reassured by the thought, she did not slacken her pace until she could see the blue river shimmering as the rays of the sun bounced off of it. She hopped down to the banks and inhaled the warm scent of fish and moisture. Ella had never seen so much water in her life, and it filled her with so much joy that she could not focus on anything but the liquid rushing down to it's unknown destination. Memorized by this, she failed to use any of her senses. She never wanted to leave. She never wanted to go back. She knew that she would miss her twolegs, but in this very moment she felt like she couldn't leave. |
