She remembered her mother telling her how beautiful it was in leaf green. The sun would make the surface of the water glitter with joy, she would say. But she wasn't seeing what her mother described. She had come to the exact spot, the old twoleg bridge, but she didn't see the glittering lake. The lake was black and covered with an ominous sheet of ice. It hugged closely to the twoleg bridge and Dapplepaw was eager to see how it would react if she touched it. She scooted closer to the edge, feeling her courage drain as she approached the black ice. What if she fell in? The question was prominent in her brain but she wasn't overly worried. "I'm RiverClan," She thought proudly. "It's in my blood to swim."She found herself hesitating on the last piece of wood that separated the ice from the bridge. She didn't know what she was so scared of. She had gotten this far, may as well go further. With nerves racked like willow branches in the wind, she reached with her paw to the ice. She tentatively placed it and grinned. It was solid. She steadily put more pressure on the ice then placed both of her front paws on it. Before she knew it, she had left the old bridge entirely. Being on the ice was strange. The ice felt almost like being on solid ground but at the same time she felt as if she were standing on the tallest tree branch in the tallest tree. There was an underlying danger that Dapplepaw couldn't help but love. She was doing something no other apprentice had done or did but wasn't brave enough to tell about it. Now that she thought about it, she wondered whether or not she was doing something wrong? Would she get in trouble if she was caught? "No," She mewed to herself. "I can just say I wanted to learn about the lake." Wanting to learn about water wasn't a crime in RiverClan was it? She put the troublesome thoughts aside and began to waddle around. The ice made her paws slip around and she loved it. Even though she was having a lot of fun she secretly wished she had someone to share it with. Being alone was never as fun as one thought it was. Her steps barely made a sound against the crisp ground but bit like the frost with every step. She didn't care, this was all still fresh in her mind. The sound of early morning birds, the brambles covering her path, and the smell of the solid river- The main reason for her trek into RiverClan territory. Her mind was filled with images of the giant rushing snake, for she knew it would be the same as she remembered it.
Indeed, it was that long river she missed so much, enough to wander into her old home just to get a glimpse of it. Summers of fishing in the bask of the sun with friends. Swimming with her mother and sister, fooling around in a simpler time of peace. These memories were enough to lead her back. Back across the path she had found so many years before. It carried the scent of cats she missed dearly and old friends she would give anything to see. Perhapse they would like to see her to. Maybe it wasn't so bad that she was trespassing. In her heart though, DawnBird knew she should not be here. Cast out for a reason, The she-cat had vowed to not return into RiverClan territory.
Oh, but that cold breeze that had carried last night. She knew the river would have calmed and frozen over- something she saw every year. It was the fresh winter breeze that still played around her whiskers. She had stayed up all night in her small den, fighting out with her better judgement. In the end, longing to see it one last time had won over her better judgement. Just one little glimpse of that beautiful blue gift from StarClan- The River- than she would leave RiverClan behind once and for all. DawnBird stopped, upon reaching the edge of the lake. Ground sloped into the solid black ice that seemed to have frozen in an instant for it had all the curves and currents in it, and she crouched there in the crisp ferns. Her favorite spot, secrete to all but her heart. The river spread in front of her like a giant black snake, with the feeling of home. Her paws brushed the solid ice just slightly but she stayed hidden in the undergrowth. RiverClan would not pay kindly to seeing a rouge skidding across there frozen river.
